Smoking effects, wondering how
smoking effects you and your loved ones? Are you addicted to cigarettes
and need some incentive to stop smoking? The following is not a stop
smoking lecture, this is an article composed by one of our staff doctors
that outlines the effects of smoking. The following page discusses the
effects of smoking including how smoking effects:
If you smoke, invest just a few minutes so you can understand the negative effects of smoking!

Again this is not a Stop Smoking Lecture
I have convinced many of my patients to stop smoking not by giving them a lengthy in a stern voice lecture but merely explaining to them how smoking promotes physiological changes that are not beneficial to their well being -- there is a difference, stop smoking lecture verses presenting valuable information.
First the
Good News, If You Stop Smoking
(Quit
smoking and you will reverse the negative effects of smoking.)
-
Respected clinical studies have shown that if you quit smoking eventually many of the negative side effects associated with smoking are reversed. The following represent the positive points that will fuel the motivation to stop smoking:
-
Decrease in the Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke - research indicates within two years of stopping smoking your risk for a heart attack will be reduced to the levels of someone who never smoked.
-
Significantly Lower Risk For Cancer - the risk of lung cancer, as well as, cancer of the mouth, throat, bladder, and pancreas are 50% of an individual that continues to smoke within five years.
-
Reversal of the Premature Aging of the Skin - yes, if you quit smoking soon enough prior to the permanent wrinkling of the skin you will notice a decrease in the fine lines and wrinkle associated with smoking.
-
Poor Performance in the Bedroom - fortunately for those men that are failing in the bedroom, once you stop smoking you will begin to notice enhanced erections within a few short weeks.
While the news presented above is positive, please note there are certain conditions associated with chronic smoking that cannot be reversed. These conditions include COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which encompasses chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the airway) and/or emphysema (break down of the smaller sacks in the lungs). COPD represents the 4th leading cause of death in Europe.

Frightening, what is actually in a cigarette. With all the above chemicals in a single cigarette it should not be surprising that smoking is responsible for the following:
-
Cigarette smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in Europe. One out of five smokers, following a grueling history of lung diseases including: pneumonia, emphysema, bronchitis and COPD with eventually die from cancer associated with smoking.
-
Smoking also increases the risk of many other types of cancer other than lung cancer, including cancers of the throat, mouth, pancreas, kidney, bladder, breast, and cervix.
-
Heart Attacks, individuals that smoke are six times more likely to experience a heart attack when compared to individuals that choose not to smoke.

Effects of
Smoking on Your Lungs
(Understand how smoking effects the
anatomy of your lungs.)
How smoking
effects on your lungs - your lungs prior to smoking are lined
by columnar epithelia lined with cilia. The cilia are responsible for
pushing dust and other particles inhaled during the day out of your lungs,
especially the the bronchioles or the distal airway branches of the lungs
that no longer contain cartilage.
How does smoking effect these cilia? Smoking is an irritant that promotes friction and a change in columnar epithelia lined with cilia into a different type of epithelium called squamous cell epithelium. Think of the epithelium on your hand, the palm of your hand is rough squamous epithelium with callus (toughened areas of skin which has become relatively thick and hard in response to repeated friction). While the dorsal (back) of your hand is softer because the dorsal part of your hand is not used in a repetitive motions that involve friction.
This is why
the smoker has the nasty cough in the morning! Ever wonder why
smokers wake every morning coughing and coughing when they are not sick.
Per the above outline, the friction or irritation caused by smoking erases
the beneficial columnar epithelia lined with cilia and squamous epithelium
becomes prominent. Without the cilia there is no way other than by
coughing to get all the dust and other particles inhaled during the day
out of the smokers lungs. Hence, smokers wake up in the morning with that
nagging cough. Now you know understand you wake up every morning with that
nagging cough.
Finally, the repetitive friction
or aggravation to the cells lining your lung followed by months of smoking
results in dysplasia of these cells. Dysplasia is defined as, "bad
formation or a term used in pathology to refer to an abnormality in
maturation of cells within a tissue." The effects of smoking can result in
dysplasia or the earliest form of pre-cancerous cells.

Please Note: Aside from physiological changes to the anatomy of
the lung smoking is also responsible for the following:
-
Bronchitis (a condition in which the airways produce too much mucus) - with bronchitis the smoker suffers from a chronic cough in a worthless effort to clear their airways.
-
Emphysema (a disease that slowly destroys a person's ability to breath) - with Emphysema your lungs are like an old pair of underwear they are able to stretch or inflate but they do not return to the proper size. Individuals with emphysema are termed pink puffers by medical professionals. These individuals are more susceptible to pneumonia and eventually you will become dependent on oxygen.
-
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, (COPD) - refers to an individual that suffers from both chronic bronchitis and emphysema, a pair of two commonly co-existing diseases of the lungs.
Finally, smoking is also the leading of death in Europe. More specifically, Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the Europe, with 90 percent of lung cancer deaths among men and approximately 80 percent of lung cancer deaths among women attributed to smoking.

Effects of Smoking With Regards to Aging Skin
(Smoking causes premature aging of the skin, pronounced wrinkles.)
Smoking
is the second only to excessive sun exposure as a cause of pre mature
aging of the skin. Why? The nicotine in cigarettes causes a constriction
of the blood vessels in the outermost layer of your skin. This
constriction results in impaired blood flow to your skin, less blood flow
to the epidermis your skin decreases both the supply of oxygen and
important nutrients, such as vitamin A.
The
chemicals in cigarettes also damage collagen and elastin which are the
essential fibers for promoting smooth, supple skin. Without elastin and
collagen your skin begins to wrinkle and sag and you develop "smoker's
face".
Smoking also
promotes the development free radicals which are highly unstable
molecules that cause disease and damage to cell DNA. The cells of your
body start behaving erratically producing a range of responses that make
your skin age faster. A prominent study "Effects of Smoking and
Aging Skin" 2007 found a direct correlation between smoking and
increased wrinkling of skin. Smoking does not just promote premature aging
of the skin on your face but your inner inner arms and neck as well.
"There is a link between
smoking and skin damage smoking adds between 10-20 years to your natural
age".
------ Sir Liam Donaldson, The Chief Medical Officer of
the UK
“Smoking
exerts such a noticeable effect on the skin that it’s often possible to
detect whether or not a person is a smoker simply by looking at his or
her face. Smokers have more wrinkles and their skin tends to have a
greyish pallor compared to non-smokers.”
------ Professor
Young Head of Dermatology, Guys School of Medicine, London
Look How
Smoking Effects Your Skin!

1) Represents the lines associated with the normal
aging process. Fine lines that naturally appear on your face as you age.
2) Represents the premature lines or wrinkles that appear on your face after just a couple years of smoking.
3) This is indicative of the damage to your face, "deep wrinkles" that will appear on your face if you smoke longer than three years.
In addition, repeated exposure to the heat from burning cigarettes and the facial expressions you make when smoking — such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke also contributes to premature wrinkles.
GOOD NEWS: Many of these wrinkles will not be as apparent if you stop smoking. Once you stop smoking the constriction of the capillaries in your skin is reversed allowing the flow of blood carrying oxygen and other nutrients to the epidermis of the skin, helping to reverse some of the signs of aging.

Effects of Smoking on Identical
Twins
(Yes, smoking does promote premature aging of the skin.)
The following further illustrates the effects of smoking with regards to promoting premature aging of the skin in identical twins:

Do not kid yourself, changes in the quality of your skin can occur in less than six months of smoking one pack per day. Many individuals assume you have to smoke for 5 years or more for smoking to have a negative effect on your skin --- NOT THE CASE! The twins depicted above illustrate the negative effects of smoking with regards to your skin. The years go and we age too quick why give your skin any help in the aging process?
Smoking and Impotence
(Yes, smoking
effects your performance in the bedroom.)
The Smoking and Health (ASH) and the British Medical Association (BMA) estimate that up to 120,000 men over 30 years old suffer from impotence as a negative effect of smoking. This figure is likely to be very conservative, because it does not include impotence due to previous smoking in men who no longer smoke.
If you smoke more than
a 1/2 pack of cigarette per day for over six months you have a one in
three chance that you will not perform to previous levels in the bedroom,
inability to perform, inability to a achieve, inability to maintain an
erection?

Impotence
Caused By Smoking - Smoking as been linked as a cause of
impotence in numerous clinical studies. After smoking just two
cigarettes, the diameter of the internal pudendal artery narrows and the
penile arteries almost completely close. This evidence shows that
smoking causes a constriction of the arteries in the penis. These
observations are supported by physiological evidence that nicotine
causes acute peripheral vasoconstriction. Acute Vasospasm of Penile
Arteries in Response to Cigarette Smoking. Urology 2008; 36(1):99-100
Any time a man experience obstruction of the flow of blood
Researchers at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina concluded that male smokers who suffer from long standing hypertension are 26 times more likely to be impotent than those individuals who do not smoke. April 2009, The Journal of Family Practice.
Aside from impotence, smoking as also been linked to the following negative effect concerning male sexual health:
-
Reduced volume of ejaculation
-
Lowered sperm count
-
Abnormal sperm shape
-
Impaired sperm motility
Smoking Effects Your Sperm Count
(Smoking has been shown to
decrease sperm levels.)

So what about smoking causes problems with sperm? Well,
it can be tough to tell. There are a LOT of chemicals in cigarettes,
estimates are over 250 chemicals, about 40 of which can cause cancer (Bernhard,
2009). Interestingly to researchers, some of these chemicals are heavy metals
such as cadmium, which is associated with problems in the respiratory tract, as
well as being associated with male infertility.
Cadmium is known to disrupt spermatogenesis, and it's thought that this might be through disrupting essential elements such as magnesium, calcium, and zinc. Calcium is particularly important, it's one of the biggest regulators of sperm motility, and an increase in calcium is necessary to cause the sperm to release its acrosomal packet when the sperm attaches to the egg. Without that rise in calcium, the sperm will not release enzymes to get through to the egg, and the fertilization will not happen.

Understand The Effects of
Second Hand Smoke
(Without question second hand
will kill your loved ones.)
Second hand smoke, passive smoking, or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), is involuntary smoking secondary to the exhaled and ambient smoke from another individual's cigarette. Unfortunately, non-smokers exposed to second hand smoke are often at greater risk for many of the health issues than the actual individual smoking the cigarette.
Individuals residing with smokers have about a 25% increase in risk of death from heart attack, as well as, an increased risk to suffer a stroke. Dome studies believe these percentages are conservative and the actual risk is more pronounced. A recent study in The British Medical Journal reported that exposure to second hand smoke increases the risk of heart disease by as much as 60 percent in non smokers subjected to second hand smoke!
But
DId You Know?
A recent study in the New England
Journal of Medicine (the most credible medical journal) reports that 90
percent of children that suffer from asthma have at least one parent
that smokes (Asthma is a medical condition that causes narrowing of the
small airways in the lungs. Patients develop wheezing with increased
mucous production in their lungs. These individuals will have episodes
of increased life - threatening shortness of breath, often triggered by
smoking and/or allergic reactions).
Imagine subjecting your children, nieces, nephews, friends and family to the
symptoms of asthma because you cannot put your cigarettes down. "Well I
do not smoke around the children"! Not Good Enough --- nicotine does not
hide, the nicotine residue in your home, car, clothes, etc. will all
trigger an asthmatic attack in a child with asthma.
Remember,
90% of children that suffer
from asthma have at least one parent that smoke.
